DEER LAKE CAMPSITES: Campsite 1 (#693): The campsite is right next to the Caribou Lake/Clearwater Lake portage landing
The shape of this lake more resembles a fish than a deer, so not sure where the lake got its name.
There are two portages out of Deer Lake, but they lead to three different lakes. This makes the lake somewhat of a crossroads. The portage in the southeast corner of the lake leads to Moon Lake. The other portage leads to either Caribou Lake or Clearwater Lake. There are two turnoffs along this long portage to the right. They both lead to Caribou Lake, but one is only 60 rods aways while the other is closer to 200 rods. The second turnoff to Caribou Lake along this portage is intended for those traveling from Clearwater Lake to Caribou Lake. If you walk the entire 240 rods, you come to Clearwater Lake at the back of a small bay. This long portage starts right next to BWCA Campsite 693, the only campsite on Deer Lake. The portage extending all the way from Deer Lake to Clearwater Lake was build on the remains of an old road, an extension of the existing South Clearwater Lake Road.
Deer Lake waters drain out the east end of the lake through a small creek into Caribou Lake. Water flows into Deer Lake from Moon Lake, from a small creek near that portage.
There is a hill with an elevation of 1834 feet between Deer Lake and Moon Lake. This hill rises 193 feet above the surface of Deer Lake.
