Pictographs in the BWCA and Quetico

Cliff on North Hegman Lake.

Besides the markers shown on all the familiar BWCA maps used for navigation, there are a number of published books that can help you locate and learn about the pictograph sites located in the BWCA and Quetico Provincial Park. Here are a few for reference in no particular order:

Magic on the Rocks - canoe country pictographs by Michael Furtman - good general reference
Indian Rock Paintings of the Great Lakes by Selwyn Dewdney and Kenneth Kidd - covers entire Great Lakes region, not just BWCA
Reading Rock Art: Interpreting the Indian Rock Paintings of the Canadian Shield by Grace Rajnovich
Northwood Pictographs(TM) - excellent resource for descriptions of the pictographs; great for locating pictographs on the cliff face

Many of the pictographs are very faded and difficult to locate even when you are looking at the correct cliff face (and even in the correct spot!). Therefore, the resources listed above are quite useful. You may have to combine information from several of them to figure some of these pictograph sites out.
