Cookoosh Lake

Cookoosh is a name for salted pork that the voyageurs used to eat while passing through this area. Cookoosh Lake is easily accessible from Hoe Lake by coming up through Maymay Lake.
In 1875, a large fire complex called the Alice Lake/Ogishkemuncie Lake/Tuscarora Lake/Cherokee Lake Complex burned the area around all those major lakes. It probably started near Lake Insula or the Hog Lake area.
There was another large fire in this area around 1863-1864. This fire is known as the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex. Like the fire that burned this area in 1875, it began south of the current BWCAW's southern boundary.
Approach to Cookoosh Lake
Small channel coming from Cookoosh Lake connects it with the north end of Maymay Lake.
Bushwhack to Cookoosh Lake
A simple paddle and maybe beaver dam lift over between Maymay Lake and Cookoosh Lake.
Exploring Cookoosh Lake
The lake has several large rock ledges that make up part of its shoreline. A creek heading north from Cookoosh Lake could be used as one route up to Horsefish Lake. The other way to Horsefish Lake is the long bushwhack on a formerly maintained portage trail from Pace Lake, which is just north of Amimi Lake.
