Intersection Lake
A good sized lake that is quite remote and difficult to reach. Intersection Lake is well separated from other lakes in this PMA, so has to be done by itself. Intersection Lake is not on any routes so this is a “there and back” trip.
Intersection Lake gets its name because of the fact that it is located at the corners of four USGS sections. A "section" is a one square mile area of land (640 acres).
A large 1875 fire that likely ignited somewhere near Lake Insula and the Hog Lake area. The fire is known as the Alice Lake/Ogishkemuncie Lake/Tuscarora Lake/Cherokee Lake Complex.
One of the huge 1863-64 fires, namely the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex, ravaged this area. This fire likely started near the town of Isabella, Minnesota.
This fire started within what is now the Hairy Lake Primitive Management Area. The ignition point was probably somewhere between Mass Lake and Auk Lake. This fire, which took place in 1846, is called the Auk Lake/Long Island Lake/Cross Bay Lake Complex.
Way back in 1727, the Gordon Lake/Brule Lake/Winchell Lake Complex burned this area. It probably began somewhere near Sawbill Lake.
Approach to Intersection Lake
Probably a good starting point is from the west bank of the Frost River, about a quarter mile downstream from where it exits Pencil Lake. GPS point is: 47.987759, -90.886871
Bushwhack to Intersection Lake
Follow a very small stream/valley bearing almost due west from the Frost River. This valley contains trees and brush so it will be a difficult bushwhack. Total distance from this direction is about half a mile.
Exploring Intersection Lake
Lake has a varied shoreline of peat bogs, marsh, rock outcrops and forest cover. A small island in a swampy bay is located on the east side of the lake. There are no obvious streams flowing in or out of the lake, but several peat bogs around the lake probably provide some drainage. A prominent rounded point that was likely once an island, juts out from the eastern shoreline.
