Fungus Lake
Not to be confused with Fungus Lake in the Fungus Lake Primitive Management Area. This is a dead end lake lying northwest of Ragged Lake. A long, unnavigable stream seems to connect Fungus Lake to Thelma Lake which lies a mile or so to the north.
A large 1875 fire that likely ignited somewhere near Lake Insula and the Hog Lake area. The fire is known as the Alice Lake/Ogishkemuncie Lake/Tuscarora Lake/Cherokee Lake Complex.
One of the huge 1863-64 fires, namely the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex, ravaged this area. This fire likely started near the town of Isabella, Minnesota.
A sizeable fire started within what is now the Hairy Lake Primitive Management Area. The ignition point was probably somewhere between Mass Lake and Auk Lake. This fire, which took place in 1846, is called the Auk Lake/Long Island Lake/Cross Bay Lake Complex.
Way back in 1727, the Gordon Lake/Brule Lake/Winchell Lake Complex burned this area. It probably began somewhere near Sawbill Lake.
Approach to Fungus Lake
From either the north tip of Don Lake or the north end of Ragged Lake.
Bushwhack to Fungus Lake
From Don Lake, it is about a one-third mile bushwhack through a forested valley to the northwest to reach Fungus Lake.
From Ragged Lake, bushwhack about a quarter mile to the northwest until you reach a large peat bog. From the south end of this peat bog, where you entered it, travel to the northwest. After about 50 rods there is some open water that forms a small pond. Continue across the pond to the northwest another 30 rods or so. Next follow the forest line through a peat bog as it bends to the southwest. Continue until you get to the farthest western edge of the peat bog. There may be another small pond here with open water. From this point, you would crash through the forest for 5 rods to the shoreline of Fungus Lake.
Exploring Fungus Lake
A creek can be found at the northern most tip of the lake. This creek leads to Thelma Lake about a mile north. It is not navigable. The west bay of the lake has a small channel leading to a marshy little bay beyond. The entire shoreline is forested. A prominent point sticks out from the southwest shoreline.
