The Kawishiwi River starts where it flows out of Kawishiwi Lake. The river than continues for about 75 miles roughly west/northwest through many lakes until it eventually passes over a dam and empties into Fall Lake. Fall Lake is near the town of Winton, Minnesota. Over that course, the Kawishiwi River contains many portages where the river flows over ledges and through narrow, rocky cateracts. These areas usually have rapids and fast water necessitating a portage. This page will eventually contain links to every portage along the entire Kawishiwi River.
Kawishiwi River Portages (in order from headwaters to mouth of river):
Kawishiwi Lake to Square Lake: This section is flat water with no portages.
Square Lake to Kawasachong Lake portages: A 20 rod portage around a small waterfall and a 5 rod portage over/around beaver dam.
Kawasachong Lake to Lake Polly: This section of the Kawishiwi River is not typically visited by paddlers and there are no portages in place around the rapids through this section. Instead the route is from Kawasachong Lake to Townline Lake to Lake Polly.
Lake Polly to Koma Lake portages: Portages of 19 rods, 48 rods and 127 rods for this section
Koma Lake to Malberg Lake portage: Portage of 24 rods
Malberg Lake to River Lake portages coming from NE corner of Malberg Lake: (Note: You can also portage directly from NW corner of Malberg Lake into River Lake and skip this section.)
River Lake to Fishdance Lake portage:
Fishdance Lake to Alice Lake portages:
Alice Lake to Lake Insula portage (Note: You can also go from Alice Lake via Hum Lake, then Carol Lake and then into Lake Insula):
Lake Insula to Hudson Lake portage:
Hudson Lake to Lake Four portages (Note: You can also go from Hudson Lake to Fire Lake and then into Lake Four)::
Lake Two to Lake One portages:
Lake One to Mouth of South Kawishiwi River portages: Portage from South Kawishiwi River to Little Gabbro Lake
Mouth of South Kawishiwi River to Farm Lake portages:
Beyond Farm Lake, the Kawishiwi River flows into Garden Lake and then into Fall Lake. It is just over two miles from where the Kawishiwi River flows into Farm Lake to where it drains into Fall Lake over the dam. When heading out of Ely toward Lake One on the Fernberg Road (Hwy. 169), you pass over the Kawishiwi River right where it flows out of Garden Lake and just 1000 feet upstream from the dam at Fall Lake (Garden Lake is on your right as you go over this bridge).
