Daniels Lake
Gunflint Ranger District
ROVE LAKE CAMPSITES:
None.
Rove Lake is a small body of water along the Arrow River drainage. The Arrow River is a tributary of the Pigeon River. Rove Lake straddles the U.S./Canadian Border. The portage west to Rose Lake is one of the longest portages in the BWCA. The portage has historic significance as it is part of the Border Route or Voyageurs Route and has been used for centuries by Native Americans and fur traders. This 660 rod portage is commonly just referred to as the Long Portage. Near the midway point of this portage is a cutoff trail/portage to Daniels Lake. The portage to Daniels Lake starting from the intersection is also the north end of the Daniels Lake Trail. If you follow this trail in its entirety it will come out on the road next to Clearwater Lake Historic Lodge located on Clearwater Lake. Also, the Long Portage between Rove Lake and Rose Lake is shared by the Border Route Trail, a roughly 65-mile trail that crosses the eastern half of the BWCA, eventually joining up with the Kekekabic Trail along the Gunflint Trail (road).
Water flows through Rove Lake from west to east via the Arrow River.
If you are traveling between Rose Lake or Daniels Lake and Mountain Lake, give yourself some time. There are no campsites on Rove Lake or Watap Lake to the east.
This lake has good fishing for smallmouth bass. Watap Lake to the east has had phenomenol fishing for smallmouth bass every time I have been there.
If you are up for a hike, the Border Route Trail runs along a good portion of the south shore of Rove Lake.
