Sunhigh Lake

Tofte Ranger District

SUNHIGH LAKE CAMPSITE:
Campsite 1: (#842) - This is the only campsite on the lake. It's on the north shoreline.

A fairly remote dead end lake west of Wonder Lake and southwest of Alton Lake along the Plouff Creek drainage. Plouff Creek flows into the west side of Sunhigh Lake, making its way from Sunlow Lake. The creek exits the eastern end o Sunhigh Lake. From that point it flows gently toward Wonder Lake. Plouff Creek is not navigable west of Sunhigh Lake in case you have aspirations of visiting Sunlow Lake.

There is a single campsite "barely" maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. A very minimalist site.

The lakes water is somewhat stained, so it is rather opaque.

Sunhigh Lake impacted by the 1999 July Fourth windstorm.

At the time of the last visit to this lake (May 16, 2021), there appeared to be a small forest fire burning to the southeast of Sunhigh Lake. See the video below "Paddling - Sunhigh Lake - From lakes campsite to the Plouff Creek outflow". That video is likely the only visual evidence of this small forest fire. About an hour or so after this video was taken, heavy rains soaked this area. There was nobody else on Sunhigh Lake or Wonder Lake at the time of this video.

PADDLING FROM BWCA CAMPSITE 842 TO THE PLOUFF CREEK OUTLET

Sunhigh Lake map1 Continuing the counterclockwise paddle around Sunhigh Lake. Begins at the lakes one and only campsite and then continues over to where Plouff Creek flows into the lake. This is on the west end of the lake. As we're backing the canoe out of Plouff Creek, you can see a small forest fire across the lake (starting at about the 10:30 mark in the video). This was on May 16, 2021. There was heavy rain in this area about an hour after this video footage was recorded, so the fire would have been suppressed by that timely precipitation. From the west end of the lake, continue over the the south side of Sunhigh Lake and contiue onward until returning back to the Plouff Creek outlet on the east end of the lake.
