PETERSON LAKE CAMPSITE: Campsite 1: (#823) - Only campsite on the lake and its located on the east shoreline
Peterson Lake is small and is part of the Temperance River drainage. There is a single campsite near mid-lake along the eastern shoreline.
The portage northbound into Kelly Lake can be skipped during periods of high water. The portage south into Baker Lake is short and easy if the water levels are adequate. However, during periods of drought the portage to Baker Lake can become more difficult. It may require portaging twice and paddling the intervening distance between them. The landings become more difficult in really low water too. If the water is very high, use some extra caution launching or landing your canoes around this portage.
The lake has a few northern pike, walleye and smallmouth bass in it.
Peterson Lake is fed by an unnavigable creek flowing into its east side that has its headwaters at Gossip Lake. The Temperance River flows north to south through Peterson Lake.
The Baker Lake Rustic Campground is also located here. You can camp here for free and reservations are not required. It is a small campground, so don't arrive too late, otherwise you may find it full. You could just basecamp at the campground and explore the other lakes in the area with an empty canoe. Sure would make those portages easy.

PADDLING FROM THE BAKER LAKE PORTAGE TO BWCA CAMPSITE 823
This was recorded when the water level was very low. The first part of this route is typically paddled, but in this case travel required paddling away from the Baker Lake portage along a short stretch of water (actually the Temperance River) and then portaging along the river bed until reaching deep enough water to float a canoe in Peterson Lake.

PADDLING FROM THE KELLY LAKE PORTAGE TO THE BAKER LAKE PORTAGE
Paddling the length of Peterson Lake from the Kelly Lake portage, southbound to the Baker Lake portage. Note that this was during a time of very low water levels so the portage to Baker Lake was much longer. Usually you can paddle into the Temperance River for a few hundred feet to the usual location of the Baker Lake portage.
