This small lake is actually unnamed, thus the name is in ( ). The real Grassy Lake lies about a mile to the west. However, this lake is often called (Grassy) Lake, so BWCAwild.com will call it that just to make referencing it easier.
If (Grassy) Lake has really low water levels, the portage between Mulligan Lake and Wanihigan Lake becomes a single longer 290 rod portage. The route is otherwise a 40 rod portage, then a brief paddle across (Grassy Lake), followed by a 185 rod portage. The section that is referred to as (Grassy) Lake during high water becomes a muddy mess of a 65 rod portage during low water. Add the 40 rod portage plus the 65 rod portage and then the 185 rod portage and you get about 290 rods of portaging if water levels are really low.
The hills on either side of (Grassy) Lake exceed 2100 feet in elevation (about 200 feet above the lake). This is quite high for the State of Minnesota. The highest point in Minnesota is Eagle Mountain at 2,302 feet, which is located about 6-miles southeast of (Grassy) Lake.
(Grassy) Lake flows out towards the south into Mulligan Lake through a small creek.
