Nuthatch Lake
Powwow Trail spur used to come all the way up to Nuthatch Lake from Ferne Lake. This old trail shows up on the Fisher F-5 map revised in 2001. There also used to be an old road that came in from the northwest towards Nuthatch Lake. Remnants of this are still visible on Google Maps.
This area was scorched by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire that burned much of the southwestern part of the BWCA and was the largest fire in recorded history at about 100,000 acres (almost 10% of the entire BWCA).
There was a large fire in this area around 1863-1864. This fire is known as the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex. This burn began south of the current BWCAW's southern boundary near the town of Isabella, Minnesota.
Approach to Nuthatch Lake
Nuthatch Lake is so remote, that there are several approaches, all long, hard and miserable.
Bushwhack to Nuthatch Lake
Whichever direction you come from is a long and arduous track.
Exploring Nuthatch Lake
Search for the old road or trail that used to come right down next to the lake on its north side near the middle of the shoreline. Another trail, perhaps a spur of the Powwow Trail, used to cross the swampy long west arm of Nuthatch Lake. This is easily visible on Google Maps.
