Clevise Lake

Fungus Lake PMA

So what is a clevis? According to the dictionary, a clevis is "a U-shaped or forked metal connector within which another part can be fastened by means of a bolt or pin passing through the ends of the connector".

Clevise Lake is at the end of a dead end spur south of Promise Lake. To get here you first have to get to Promise Lake. Into the south side of Promise Lake flows the small creek coming from Clevise Lake. This little creek is about a half mile long, give or take. It appears from satellite images that good sections of this creek are navigable, but would expect a good workout if you ever want to see Clevise Lake with your own eyes.

The south end of Clevise Lake appears shallower than the north end. The north end could perhaps be deep enough to prevent a freeze out (so maybe fish are present?). The west shoreline is quite rocky. All of the shoreline has been nicely crisped by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire.

Both Promise Lake and Clevise Lake would probably make a good day trip from a campsite on Hope Lake (if any campsite still exists given the fire).

This area was scorched by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire that burned much of the southwestern part of the BWCA and was the largest fire in recorded history at about 100,000 acres (almost 10% of the entire BWCA).

There was a large fire in this area around 1863-1864. This fire is known as the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex. This burn began south of the current BWCAW's southern boundary near the town of Isabella, Minnesota.

Approach to Clevise Lake

The entire approach into Clevise Lake is through Promise Lake.

Bushwhack to Clevise Lake

The bushwhack into Clevise Lake is upstream along a small creek that flows from the north end of Clevise Lake into the south end of Promise Lake. This creek looks to pass through the usual marshy terrain. However, there appears to be large rocky outcrops beyond the creeks mushy boundaries that may offer some pretty vistas along your route.

Exploring Clevise Lake

What Clevise Lake looks like from a canoe is unknown. Doubt that anyone has been to Clevise Lake in years. There is no information to be found on this small lake.
