Parsnip Lake
Gunflint Ranger District
Parsnip Lake is a member of the "vegetable chain" of lakes. Most of the little lakes in this area are named for some type of veggie. These include Bean Lake, South Bean Lake, Carrot Lake, Tomato Lake (actually a fruit), Potato Lake, Celery Lake, Squash Lake, Turnip Lake, Cucumber Lake, Onion Lake, Mellon Lake and Peanut Lake (yep, it's a veggie, not a nut). The lake lies just outside of the BWCA.
It's importance with regards to the Boundary Waters is due to the fact it is along the route used to gain entry from the alternate BWCA Entry Point #66 located on Shoe Lake Road. Most paddlers use the East Bearskin Lake starting point for this entry point. The route from the entry point requires portaging about 60 rods into South Bean Lake. From South Bean Lake portage 40 rods into Parsnip Lake. Finally from Parsnip Lake, it's a 110 rod portage to the Crocodile River. You officially enter the BWCA as you near the Crocodile River while walking this portage. The parking area on Shoe Lake Road is very small and is easy to miss.
Parsnip Lake has few fish in it. Maybe some largemouth bass. It does have a good population of white suckers living in its waters though.
Bean Lake flows into Parsnip Lake through a small creek. This creek enters Parsnip Lake at its eastern tip. Parsnip Lake flows out a small creek that flows north into the Crocodile River. Tomato Lake is at the top of this small drainage system.
