Winchell Lake is the ninth deepest lake in the Boundary Waters. It's the fourth deepest lake that is entirely within the BWCA.
The lake is primarily a lake trout fishery. Northern pike (which run large in this lake) and smallmouth bass are present in low numbers.
There is a nice overlook of Winchell Lake that is accessible by climbing a steep trail located on the south side of the lake about a mile east of the Wanihigan Lake portage.
Winchell Lake drains to the northeast into Gaskin Lake through a creek that flows out of the lake between BWCA Campsite 758 and BWCA Campsite 767 along the north shoreline.
