Small shallow lake sandwiched between two large bodies of water. Water flows through Rat Lake from South Lake and into Rose Lake over a small set of rapids next to the portage.
There is a campsite on Rat Lake, but it is technically located on Rose Lake. BWCA Campsite 647 is connected to the portage between Rose Lake and Rat Lake. There are two portages between Rat Lake and Rose Lake, one on the Canadian side and one on the U.S. side. The U.S. portage is easier.
Rat Lake regularly hosts nesting trumpeter swans, so they are commonly seen here.
The Rose Lake cliffs are easily seen from the west end of Rat Lake.

PADDLING FROM THE SOUTH LAKE PORTAGE TO THE ROSE LAKE PORTAGE
There is a international boundary marker embedded in the rock right in the middle of the portage landing. Paddling across Rat Lake from the South Lake portage to the Rose Lake portage. Rose Mountain, the most prominent of the Rose Lake Cliffs, is visible directly across the lake as you leave the portage.
