Posse Lake
Have not yet visited this Primitive Management Area lake. The information displayed on this page are notes used for planning a future trip to this area. Use the information on this page at your own risk.
Posse Lake is 12 acres in area according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. However, depending on water levels, this lake probably widens and shrinks as it is really just a wide area of the Hustler River, a slow moving river that flows from south to north from Hustler Lake to Finger Lake. There is another small lake, about a quarter mile downstream (north) of Posse Lake, but that body of water is unnamed.
Who the posse was looking? Posse could have some relationship to the word "hustler" though. A hustler is a go-getter, often of nefarious persuasion. The posse could have been looking for the hustler. And perhaps the hustler was a gambling sort, a lucky Finn perhaps...
This area of the BWCA has escaped fire for a long time. The most recent fire was in 1755. That fire is known as the Big Moose, Oyster and Lac La Croix complex. Another fire affected the area in 1681.
Approach to Posse Lake
Posse Lake can be approached from the north or the south along the Hustler River.
Bushwhack to Posse Lake
Bushwhacking into Posse Lake simply requires following the Hustler River coming from the north or the south. Visit the Hustler River page for details of that part of the trip.
Exploring Posse Lake
There are a few pictures available on some of the popular BWCA websites of Posse Lake. The lake has a wooded and occasionally rocky shoreline so camping here is feasible; unlike many small lakes which are surrounded by peat bogs and have little firm ground available.
