Portaging Direction: From Moon Lake to Flour Lake
Hard to get close to shore because of all the rocks and shallowness of the water.
The portage traverses a boulder field of a small creek bed for the first 50 feet or so. After that it's a fairly normal BWCA portage trail. The portage passes through a woodland with many large cedar trees. This portage could get wet and muddy in spots. Lots of skeeters! The trail is slightly uphill in this direction. You'll pass by a small creek flowing from Flour Lake down to Moon Lake. There is a permit box just before reaching Flour Lake. Use this if you need a BWCA day permit. The trail continues past the Flour Lake portage landing as a ski trail.
The landing is OK, but it is hidden from the lake somewhat under a bunch of cedar trees.

Portaging Direction: From Flour Lake to Moon Lake
Easy boat landing on Deer Lake.
From the landing, you will walk perhaps 10 feet and turn right. To the left is a ski trail that continues on from the end of the portage. In a few hundred feet, there is a permit box available for filling out BWCA day permits. The trail is flat for a while after passing the permit box. It then descends a short hill, with a babbling brook on the right side of the path. At the bottom of the hill, the portage proceeds through a grove of cedar trees, many quite large. Finally, at the end of the portage, you cross a short boulder field. These boulders are probably a creek bed. The portage landing on Moon Lake may require wet feet, since the water is shallow and full of rocks that stick above the surface requiring you to hop rocks or just walk in the water a couple yards from shore.
Launching and landing a canoe here is made difficult by the myriad rocks sticking up out of the shallow water.
