One Island Lake
Gunflint Ranger District
There was extensive logging around this lake from 1954 to 1972. This was made possible by the Finn Lake Timber Sale to the Consolidated Papers Company. This company built logging roads from the end of the General Logging Railway that ended near Poplar Lake, out to the area around Banadad Lake. Some of these roads have been converted into the modern day Banadad Ski Trail. That trail is accessible along the portage between One Island Lake and Portage Lake.
Most signs of the logging era were obliterated by the 2007 Ham Lake Fire, which burned about 70% of One Island Lakes shoreline.
There is a lot of good moose habitat in this area, so be on the lookout for them.
One Island Lake drains to the south through a creek into Rush Lake. This creek flows out of the lake just east of the Rush Lake portage landing. The creek valley is visible in a few places along the portage between these two lakes. One Island Lake is only fed by small cricks draining the surrounding terrain.
