Flying Creek
Gunflint Ranger District
This is a very short north flowing creek that connects Flying Lake to the Chub River. If you are headed to either Bingshick Lake or Fay Lake, then paddling Flying Creek downstream from the north end of Flying Lake is the way to go. Look for a rock ledge that marks the 15 rod portage to the Chub River. This portage is short, but difficult, down a steep grade.
This creek flows through a wetland that has lots of beaver activity. You may have to overcome a beaver dam along this short waterway. The area is near the forest impacted by the Ham Lake and Cavity Lake fires.

PADDLING FLYING CREEK UPSTREAM FROM THE CHUB RIVER PORTAGE TO FLYING LAKE
Looking upstream at Flying Creek from the start of the portage to the Chub River. Flying Lake is about 1500 feet upstream from here. There is no current to speak of, but there may be a beaver dam. The portage is only 15 rods to the Chub River, but it is tough. Muddy, steep and rocky.
