Crab Lake
Gunflint Ranger District
Only the very eastern tip of Crab Lake lies within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The most likely reason you'll be visiting this lake is because the Crab Lake Trail runs along most of the south shoreline of the lake. The Crab Lake Trail is a spur trail of the Border Route Trail. The Crab Lake Trail is easy walking and closely follows the lakeshore.
The roughly 160 rod portage between Little Mayhew Lake and Crab Lake isn't shown on most maps. This is a steep portage (gains about 180 feet of elevation) that goes up a ridge and then back down the ridge to reach Little Mayhew Lake on the otherside. The portage connects Crab Lake to the eastern end of Little Mayhew Lake. There appears to be a connecting portage from there to the west end of Mayhew Lake.
Water flows into the western end of Crab Lake through a small creek that originates at Loon Lake. Crab Lake drains to the north through a large creek. This creek tumbles over Bridal Falls about a mile downstream of the outlet. Soon after flowing over the waterfall, the creek drains into Gunflint Lake.
