Here is the campsite walkthrough. Note that on maps it looks like the 35 rod portage between Karl Lake and Long Island Lake goes through or very close to this portage. That is not the case. The portage is a 100 feet or more to the south of this campsite. The canoe landing for this camping is a large, sloped rock face commonly seen in the BWCA. It doubles as a nice platform for lying around and/or star watching. The fire grate has a nice setup surrounded by young spruce trees. There is one large tent pad and perhaps two small ones.
This campsite has one of those rock slab setups. In the case of this particular site, the rock slab creates a nice shallow rise from the water making it easy to stand upon. Some of the steeper ones can be pretty slippery.
The portage to Lower George Lake is back in that bay, just to the left of that point across the lake. The channel to Doe Lake is just to the left of your view, across the lake. From this campsite you have an expansive view of most of the northern half of Karl Lake.
The usual "kitchen".
Kitchen area is not huge, but should be adequate for all but the largest groups allowed in the BWCA. The area has nice views of the lake, but enough trees to offer some protection from the wind.
The primary tent pad for this campsite. A couple smaller tent sites could be established at this camp too.
