Portaging Direction: From the Royal River to North Fowl Lake
There is a good landing here. A beaver dam is usually present just downstream of this portage landing.
Trivia: This is the easternmost portage in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. This 160 rod portage doesn't quite make it all the way to the lake. If the water levels are low, you will have to walk several hundred feet down the river from the portage to reach water deep enough to float your canoe out into North Fowl Lake. The river is easy to walk when it is running low, with a hard bottom and few obstacles in the water.

Portaging Direction: From North Fowl Lake to the Royal River
From North Fowl Lake, you may have to walk your canoe a few hundred feet up the Royal River until you reach the beginning of this portage if the water in the river is low. If water levels are high, you will have to paddle up the river or possibly line your canoe if the current is too strong.
Great canoe landing. There is more often than not a beaver dam just downstream of this landing.
