Portaging Direction: From Kelly Lake to Burnt Lake
This canoe landing is nearly as smooth as a babies bottom.
The portage ascends steadily from Kelly Lake as it moves up onto the southwest shoulder of the small mountain located just to the northeast. After gaining nearly 100 feet during the first half of the portage, the portage heads down the slope and gives about 70 feet of elevation back. Eventually you reach Burnt Lake which is 27 feet in elevation above Kelly Lake. The portage path itself is in pretty good shape. It is just the elevation change that makes this long portage feel even longer. Somewhere near the middle of this portage, it crosses an old logging road (around the low swampy section). (Note: Roughly the first 170 rods of this portage were done with canoe, which limits visibility in the video.)
Burnt Lake won't burn on this day as it never stopped raining from late morning until dusk. The loons don't seem to mind it though. The landing here on Burnt Lake is plenty adequate for several canoes to park simultaneously. Behind you near the end of this portage, there was a beat up aluminum canoe stashed in the forest (May 2016). It appears to be a "ditch" as the boat was in rough shape.

Portaging Direction: From Burnt Lake to Kelly Lake
At the start of the Kelly Lake portage from Burnt Lake, there is a canoe stuck in the woods to your right. Upon quick examination, it appears it may be "unseaworthy"; it's in pretty shoddy condition. The landing on Burnt Lake is decent (even after an all day soaker).
Kelly Lake peering to the south down the west shoreline. Kelly Lake is just a wide spot in the Temperance River. The canoe landing here is as nice a put in spot as you're likely to find in this part of the world.
