The Portage between Alton Lake and Wonder Lake
Portaging Direction: From Alton Lake to Wonder Lake
As you can see, the water is shallow. The bottom is made of small rocks and gravel. Easy footing overall. You have to live your boats up onto the root covered shoreline.
Both ends of this portage have nice landings, with the Wonder Lake end being the best. The portage is pretty long at 200 rods, but there are no great hills to climb, just rolling terrain to cross with moderate up and down slopes. You only gain 9 feet of elevation going from Alton Lake to Wonder Lake. This video was taken in the spring. Would expect this portage to be a bit "brushy" once the leaves fill in on the trees. The portage is almost entirely free of mud pits; mostly high and dry.
At the Wonder Lake end of this portage, you have shallow water with the lake bottom composed of small gravel and sand. Excellent canoe landing.

Pull right up to shore on this one. Water is about six inches deep.
Great landing on Wonder Lake. The portage is nearly flat over its entire length, albeit it rolls up and down modestly in a few places along its length. Overall you will lose just 9 feet of elevation from Wonder Lake to Alton Lake. The portage is in great shape with little mud. Vegetation will encroach on the trail by midsummer. The view shown he is in spring, before the leaves had sprouted on the trees.
Looking north at Alton Lake from the Wonder Lake portage. Those clouds are starting to look a bit ominous...they had promised no rain today... (This portage landing has one foot or so ledge to step down, but otherwise a great landing with both shallow water and hard lake bottom.)
