Portaging Direction: From Abinodji Lake to Haven Lake
The portage to Haven Lake starts at a rock ledge which you have to lift your gear up onto. The landing is not the best. A curious red pine squirrel lives in that dead tree to the right and peeks out of the hole from time to time. The squirrel has probably learned that folks stop and snack at portage landings and have a tendency to leave crumbs. An entertaining chap.
This is a fairly rugged portage with a lot of elevation change. From Abinodji Lake, the trail gains around 50 feet in the first 20 rods until it levels out on top of a plateau. The trail is flat for 20 rods on top of the hill, but then becomes as steady descent (with many large step downs at rock ledges) losing around 90 feet of elevation to Haven Lake. Haven Lake is at 1425 feet above sea level. Abinodji Lake is around 1450 feet above sea level. Occasionally big rocks poke out of the ground along the portage trail that want to trip you up. Trail is harder if going from Haven Lake to Abinodji Lake as there is about twice the elevation gain in that direction. Take a couple extra gulps out of the water bottle and an extra handful of trail mix before undertaking this one.
