ROUTES/PORTAGES FROM SKULL LAKE:
To Newfound Lake: Walk the 20 rod portage
Skull Lake
Kawishiwi Ranger District
Tiny lake on the eastern side of Newfound Lake. The portage into Skull Lake is mostly uphill.
This lake is managed for brook trout, but there is a good population of largemouth bass in the lake too. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has stocked the lake with brookies, consistently, for many years up to the time of the most recent visit to this lake.
The north end of the lake is shallow with a flat bottom (visible through the relatively clear water). There is a high cliff rising well above (about 160 feet) the southwestern corner of the lake. The lakeshore on the north end of the lake has extensive boggy areas. Most of the rest of the shoreline has dense (nearly impassable), new growth forest.
