Contest Lake
Gunflint Ranger District
The remains of this lake lie along the Missing Link Lake to Tuscarora Lake portage trail. The lake is visible from the portage trail and is surrounded by wetland. Contest Lake (really more of a wetland now) flows out to the south through a creek and marsh and drains into Howl Lake. Contest Lake morphs in size depending on precipitation levels. When the water levels are high in the lake, it begins to flood the Missing Link Lake-Tuscarora Lake portage, which can make for some rough going. The lake contains no fish other than perhaps a few hardy bullhead. The lake is in the final stages of its life. It will soon become just a bog as the open water is swallowed up by the vegetation. Eventually it will fill in further and be intruded by trees that like damp lowland habitat.
There is another small lake named "Contest" in the BWCA. That other Contest Lake is located in the Sundial Lake Primitive Management Area.
