Totem Lake would make for an easy side trip from Ester Lake. It is a 5 rod bushwhack through the little creek that connects Totem Lake to Ester Lake. Totem Lake is probably not a desirable lake to camp on because it looks to have a mushy shoreline for the most part. There is a campsite on Ester Lake right next to where you head into Totem Lake.
Totem Lake has northern pike in its waters.
A huge fire in 1863 or 1864 known as the Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake complex burned the forests in this area.
Just after the turn of the 19th century, in 1801, another fire burned the area stretching from Gabimichigami Lake up through the Saganaga Lake area.
In 1727, area was burned by a fire that covered the region from Amoeber Lake to Sea Gull Lake.
1692 saw another large fire affect this area in what is now the BWCA.

Exploring Totem Lake
The lake has an interesting shoreline with the long point dividing the lake in two. Lake would be a good place to visit for folks camping on Ester Lake as it has northern pike for those interested in fishing. Totem Lake, being small, would be a nice place to spend the day if the wind is kicking up on the larger lakes.
