(Little) Jug Lake
This is an unnamed lake just to the south of Jug Lake. It is called Little Jug Lake on this website for ease of reference, but currently has no official name. It is also technically not a lake, since it is under 10 acres in size.
There was a large fire in this area around 1863-1864. This fire is known as the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex. This burn began south of the current BWCAW's southern boundary near the town of Isabella, Minnesota.
Approach to (Little) Jug Lake
Easiest approach is to come in from Jug Lake along a tiny creek that connects them.
Bushwhack to (Little) Jug Lake
Follow the small creek from Jug Lake into Little Jug Lake. It is just over 10 rods. About half the creek starting from the Jug Lake side is potentially navigable.
Exploring (Little) Jug Lake
A survey benchmark can be found on the south end of this unnamed lake. This benchmark was installed by the Minnesota Department of Conservation (which is now called the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources), on or about July 27, 1964. The location of the benchmark is on the highest point of a 25 foot by 30 foot gently sloping ledge rock point. This even sounds like a good place to camp or just pull the canoe out of the water.
This lake is very deep for its size and probably contains fish. A very noticeable point juts into the south end of the lake. An underwater point extends out from the northeast shore of the lake.
