Portaging Direction: From Sandpit Lake to Tin Can Mike Lake
The easy landing is the gateway to an even easier portage (other than the length of course).
This portage was once the location of a railroad spur used by the Swallow and Hopkins Company, a logging firm that worked this area in the early 1900's. Therefore the portage has almost no elevation change and it is quite wide. There are a few muddy locations along the portage which are probably caused by the overall flatness of the portage. There is a boardwalk near the Tin Can Mike Lake end of the trail that traverses a bog.
The landing area is expansive at this end of the portage, being roughly 100 feet wide.
Portaging Direction: From Tin Can Mike Lake to Sandpit Lake
Well worn rocks at the landing area on Tin Can Mike Lake. This spot was heavily used by loggers over a century ago.
Follow the old railroad corridor (now the portage) to Sandpit Lake. Trains don't do well with elevation changes. Modern day portage users now benefit from the terrain leveling done by the railroad builders.
The landing here is top notch, with plenty of space for several canoes to load and unload.
