The Unmaintained Portage between Pipe Lake and West Pipe Lake
Portaging Direction: From Pipe Lake to West Pipe Lake
Start of the unmaintained portage to West Pipe Lake. You can see that the portage path is still visible.
This is what the shoreline looks like right where the portage begins on Pipe Lake as of 2024.
This is an unmaintained portage and is difficult to follow in a few places. Suggest having a compass and/or GPS with you when doing this portage in case you lose the trail. Other than being heavily overgrown, the portage itself is flat. The landing on Pipe Lake is somewhat easy to find. Look for a little pathway through tall grass near a tall dead tree (assuming the tree is still standing). The landing on West Pipe Lake is in a peat bog, so expect muddy, wet feet.
Soggy landing in a peat bog on the east shore of West Pipe Lake.

Portaging Direction: From West Pipe Lake to Pipe Lake
Look for this grass covered peat bog on the west end of the lake for the start of the portage.
This portage is unmaintained and difficult to follow. It is only shown on very old maps of the BWCA. The portage is mostly flat, but heavily overgrown in places. Probably a good idea to know how to navigate by GPS and/or compass before tackling this one.
