Portaging Direction: From Owl Lake to Tuscarora Lake
This boulder jumble and ledge must be overcome to get your gear up to the portage landing. This portage is 68 rods. The first 10 rods or so in this direction is uphill. The trail has several tangles of roots and many rocks to step around. After that, the rest of the portage is easy (October 2015).
Another view of the portage landing (June 2020).
A medium length portage that is uphill from Owl Lake to Tuscarora Lake for about the first 10 rods. Portage is mostly flat after that. The landing on the Tuscarora Lake side is a little better than the one on Owl Lake (June 2020).
An earlier recording of this same portage (October 2015).
View is generally towards the east along the south shore of the lake (June 2020).
You have reached Tuscarora Lake. From here you are looking west across almost two miles of open water to that far horizon. The nearest island, just left of center, is a bit over half-a-mile from where you stand. Notice the clear water of this lake (October 2015).

Portaging Direction: From Tuscarora Lake to Owl Lake
Exiting the clear waters of Tuscarora Lake, you need to lug your gear up onto the rocks. This is a 68 rod portage. The water here is shallow at least, which makes dealing with the boulders easier (October 2015).
The portage landing from a different angle (June 2020).
The well trodden path from Tuscarora Lake to Owl Lake is 68 rods. This portage is in good condition and quite easy except the last 10 rods or so as you go down the hill to Owl Lake. That part is rocky and rooty. The landing's are so-so on both ends...lots of rocks. On the Tuscarora end there is a boulder field to navigate through to get out of the lake. On the Owl Lake side, you have to lower your canoe down from a low rock ledge (June 2020).
Old footage of the portage in this direction (October 2015).
Owl Lake from the Tuscarora Lake portage landing. This landing is an elevated, two-tier rock ledge, so it is a bit of work to get your canoe in and out of the lake.
Arriving at Owl Lake early in the morning (June 2020). Another view.
