The Portage between Moose Lake and Flash Lake
Portaging Direction: From Moose Lake to Flash Lake
The portage video below starts in the parking lot for the Secret/Blackstone Hiking Trail. To get to the Moose Lake landing, you must portage a short distance down Moose Lake Road and then through the Moose Lake Entry Point parking lot, which is not shown in the video. This adds roughly 100 extra rods to the portage, making it about 360 rods total. Note that it is illegal to use this portage to enter the Boundary Waters through Snowbank Lake if you hold a Moose Lake entry permit. The reverse also holds true if you hold a Snowbank Lake BWCA entry point permit.
You will have already portage about 100 rods from Moose Lake before you get to where this video begins. The video begins in the parking lot for the Secret/Blackstone Trail. From the parking lot the trail descends to the edge of a wetland (sometimes full of water if it's been wet recently). The portage follows the shore of the marsh for a short distance. After leaving the low area, the portage climbs mildly but rather steadily uphill most of the way to Flash Lake. The portage is easy to walk and often used by hikers of the Secret/Blackstone Trail.
This long portage ends at a really fine canoe landing. (May 1, 2024).

Portaging Direction: From Flash Lake to Moose Lake
Excellent canoe landing on Flash Lake (May 1, 2024).
There is a brief wolf sighting in this video at the 4:06 mark. The portage in this direction is somewhat easier since you lose over 100 feet of elevation. This is a well worn portage and is easy to walk. Part of the portage is shared with the Secret/Blackstone Hiking Trail. The portage ends at the Secret/Blackstone trailhead parking lot after about 260 rods. From the parking lot, you will need to follow Moose Lake Road to the right (north) for a short distance and then cut through the Moose Lake Entry Point parking lot before you actually reach Moose Lake.
