Portaging Direction: From Marshall Lake to the South Brule River (Dugout Lake)

Boulders underwater here, so it is somewhat difficult to get canoe close enough to shore to avoid having to step in the water (especially solo canoes). Water is not deep. Submerged rocks are slippery here.

An easy portage. The trail is about as flat as you can hope for in this part of the BWCA. There may be a small mudhole or two. Not many rocks on this one.

The landing on this end is a touch better. You may be able to wend your way out into this little bay between the submerged rocks. Failing that, if you have to push, the water is not more than knee deep.

Portaging Direction: From the South Brule River (Dugout Lake) to Marshall Lake

You can get a pretty good look under the water as you approach this landing. As you can see it is shallow, with a few underwater boulders/rocks. It's a pretty nice landing. The bow person can get out on the big rock next to shore and the stern paddler can use the big rock that is nearest.

The portage is close to level over its short distance. The path is also in good shape, with few rocks and just a couple of small wet places to hop across.

This portage landing is rockier than the one found at the other end of this trail. A little harder to find good stable footing too, while standing in the water.
