Portaging Direction: From Kroft Lake to Rum Lake
As is common in this part of the BWCA, the landing is rugged due to an assortment of large boulders and stones.
This is the easiest portage along the route between Ram Lake and Misquah Lake. It is quite flat with very few rocks. The portage is somewhat overgrown. Some sizeable cedar trees (one in particular is noteworthy) are visible along the trail.
The lake is not deep near the portage. As you paddle away from this portage, be on the lookout for the many hidden boulders just below the surface. They are difficult to see because the water is turbid and has very low visibility. Probably why it is called Rum Lake. The landing itself isn't that rough. The water stays shallow a good distance out from shore, so wading is easy.

Portaging Direction: From Rum Lake to Kroft Lake
Landing for this portage is marked by some big pine trees. The water is not deep. Lots of boulders to thread the canoe through.
Easiest portage between Misquah Lake and Ram Lake. This portage varies little in elevation along its length. There is no mud and very few boulders to stumble over. The portage can be overgrown by summertime.
Another semi-rugged landing here at Kroft Lake.
