Portaging Direction: From Howl Lake to Tuscarora Lake
View of the landing from just offshore.
Even though this portage is listed as 125 rods (the same as the other Howl Lake portage to Hubbub Lake), it is much harder than the other Howl Lake portage. In the direction from Howl Lake to Tuscarora Lake, the portage is a bit easier as it loses 50 feet of elevation. There was substantial blowdown in this area at time of last visit, as the timing was shortly after a strong windstorm.
After completing this rugged 125 rod portage (or before starting it), Tuscarora Lake offers up a sandy beach complete with shallow water. A swim may feel good if you just did both of the Howl Lake portages. Tuscarora Lake offers quite a contrast from Howl Lake. This has got to be one of the more pleasant portage landings in the BWCA.

Portaging Direction: From Tuscarora Lake to Howl Lake
This sandy beach is a couple hundred feet long, with the start of the Howl Lake portage near the center. You won't find a better place to land a canoe.
This portage is more than the 125 rods that the maps show. It is certainly longer than the other Howl Lake portage to Hubbub Lake (also shown as 125 rods). Going from Tuscarora Lake to Howl Lake is the more difficult direction as this portage gains over 50 feet of elevation. There is substantial blowdown along the trail and it is also somewhat overgrown with vegetation.
Howl Lake with a good view of the beaver dam that extends across the entire lake. Tall grass is growing out of the top of the beaver dam. The beaver No issues with getting the canoe in or out of Howl Lake at this portage landing. Up until around 2006 there used to be a boardwalk that ran across the lake, which connected the two portages.
