Pine Portage between Clove Lake and the Pine River
Portaging Direction: From Clove Lake to the Pine River
A gravel beach. 'Nuff said.
The Pine Portage crosses Pine Island. When you reach the Pine River, you will want to head to the right (upriver). Going left (downriver) leads into a series of rapids that are not navigable. During low water (as seen in this video), the portage extends an extra three or four rods and requires muddy feet to get to the water. This is an historically signficant portage along the Voyageur's Route.
The landing is muddy if the water level is low in the Pine River. During normal or high water, the landing is on a sloped slab of rock (which is still a decent landing location).

Mucky portage landing during low water. You can see in the background the normal water level landing area on the sloped rock to the far left.
Portage crosses Pine Island. Very mild elevation gain going up and over the island. This portage has existed for many centuries and was used by the Native Americans and the voyageurs during the fur trading era. It is named the Pine Portage.
About as good as canoe landings get in the Boundary Waters.
