Easy landing. If coming through Upper Pauness Lake in the summertime, you will have to paddle through wild rice to reach this campsite. The 8-rod portage is visible to the far left of your view across the channel.
There is not a lot of shade around the kitchen proper. You can easily hear the rapids down below this campsite while sitting here.
Another view of the fire pit. Site could use a little TLC.
This is the tent pad near to the fire pit for those who like a firm mattress.
Tour of this campsite. The highlight of this campsite is the high overlook it provides of the rapids below, the Little Indian Sioux River and Upper Pauness Lake. It is right across the channel from the short portage around the rapids, but this portage gets spare usage as most groups take the 21-rod portage from Upper Pauness Lake to Lower Pauness Lake (or vice versa). There are two tent pads, one being hidden back in the woods. The trail to the latrine is a bit overgrown. Seems like this campsite only gets occasional use. This is probably because many groups don't pass this way between the Pauness Lakes and because the campsite maybe appears hard to access because of the dense fields of wild rice growing in the south end of Upper Pauness Lake.
The tent pad you see here is sort of down in a depression and hidden back in the woods.
There is this large table rock just below the fire pit that provides a great place to sit and take in the views.
View of the Little Indian Sioux River as it makes its way to Lower Pauness Lake.
Top of the rapids that are just below the campsite. Upper Pauness Lake in the distance and its extensive wild rice fields.
Ye olde green bucket is found along a weedy and overgrown trail that you pass making your way up the hill from the canoe landing at this campsite.
Early evening view of Upper Pauness Lake. You can easily paddle through the wild rice.
