This BWCA campsite on Alton Lake is just south of the Kelso Lake portage, along the lakes western shoreline.
Landing is marginal with large boulders and a ledge to negotiate. There are four tent pads at this Alton Lake campsite, but only one of them really stands out. The fire pit is set back in the woods a bit and thus has limited views of the lake. This campsite could have an insect problem due to it being closed in by trees, likely resulting in little cross breeze.
Landing is marginal with large boulders to make footing a little difficult. Must lift your boat and gear up onto a ledge to get it clear of the water.
There is a secondary landing at this campsite which has characteristics similar to the other one (described above).
You walk up a short path from the canoe landing to the fire pit area.
The kitchen is set back a fair distance from the lakeshore. Only limited views of the water from this spot.
There are four tent pads at this campsite. This one is so-so.
This tent pad is fine indeed.
A third tent pad, also very mediocre.
Up in the woods a short ways from the fire pit. Doesn't look like it sees much use. Looks level and useable. Think it doesn't get used because it's a little hidden. Bring a lawnmower.
Hmmm, #13.....The number indicates that this is campsite 13 on Alton Lake. The U.S. Forest Service uses the numbers for tracking purposes.
The only access to the lake is at the canoe landings. There is otherwise limited shoreline access at this campsite. This is a view to the south/southeast.
