Mugwump Lake PMA

Leg Lake is easily visited from Gabimichigami Lake via a 20 rod portage that still exists. Leg Lake provides easy access to another PMA Lake, that being Rapture Lake which lies just to its south via a short lift over. The west end of Leg Lake has the creek flowing into it from Image Lake. Image Lake lies about a half mile to the west.

Rather than a leg, I think Leg Lake looks more like a foot. The name "Leg" could also refer to a "leg" of a journey since many of these lakes were once used by trappers and fur traders as a transportation network.

In 1875, a large fire complex called the Alice Lake/Ogishkemuncie Lake/Tuscarora Lake/Cherokee Lake Complex burned the area around all those major lakes. It probably started near Lake Insula or the Hog Lake area.

There was another large fire in this area around 1863-1864. This fire is known as the North Kawishiwi River/Alice Lake/Cypress Lake/Saganaga Lake Complex. Like the fire that burned this area in 1875, it began south of the current BWCAW's southern boundary.

Approach to Leg Lake

Find the 20 rod portage on the very south end of Gabimichigami Lake in a large bay. Note, that one could also approach Leg Lake from Image Lake. Refer to the Image Lake write-up, if perchance you are coming from that direction.

Bushwhack to Leg Lake

It is 20 rods on an easily followed portage into Leg Lake.

Exploring Leg Lake

The west end of Leg Lake is quite swampy. The best thing about Leg Lake is that it provides routes to Image Lake and Rapture Lake.
