BWCA Portage: Green Lake to Flying Lake

Portaging from Green Lake

Portage from Green Lake to Flying Lake in BWCA
Getting gear ready to start portage from Green Lake to Flying Lake. This is a fairly challenging portage of 70 rods as it goes over a small hill. It rises steadily until about the middle of the portage, and then descends just as steadily down the otherside.

An up and over portage that climbs about 80 feet over the side of a small hill, and then descends about 80 feet to the shore of Flying Lake.

View across Flying Lake in BWCA
From the start of the Green Lake portage, looking to your left (north) up Flying Lake. The largest island in Flying Lake is visible just left of center. The island avoided the 2006 Cavity Lake Forest Fire. As you can see, the other side of the lake did not.

Now that you've made it over the portage, visit: FLYING LAKE
