Portaging Direction: From the Range River to Sandpit Lake

Range River to Sandpit Lake Portage 1
The landing on the Range River. Head up this portage about 10 rods and you come to an intersection. Take a right and its about 15 rods to Sandpit Lake.

The total length of this portage is around 25 rods. Walk about 10 rods or so up the portage from the Range River landing and you come to an intersection. If you go right, it's about 15 rods to Sandpit Lake. Going the other way will eventually get you to Range Lake. The entire portage is very level. There may be a mud hole or two that you need to skirt around, just after leaving the Range River landing.

Arrival at Sandpit Lake. The landing here is golden.

Portaging Direction: From Sandpit Lake to the Range River

The correct portage landing is the one you see here. This is at the very back of the southeast bay on Sandpit Lake. The wrong portage landing is the one about 150 feet up the east shore from this one. That portage will take you across a swamp. The portage across the swamp does get you to the Range River, just not in style. In wet conditions, portaging across the swamp will be nearly impossible.

Walk about 15 rods down the portage and take a left at the intersection. About 10 more rods will have you at the Range River. If you go straight ahead instead of turning left, you will eventually come to Range Lake (about 145 rods past the intersection).

Range River to Sandpit Lake Portage 3
Slide your canoe into the river here and go left. It's about half-a-mile to Basswood Lake. There is one other portage farther down the river that probably isn't shown on your map.

Now that you've made it over the portage, visit: RANGE LAKE
