The parking lot can sometimes be flooded by the nearby alder swamp, particularly in the spring. If this happens, the portage can extend another 50 rods or so because you'll have to park farther away.

Portaging Direction: From BWCA Entry Point 67 to Bog Lake

BWCA Entry Point 67 to Bog Lake Portage 1
The start of this 250 rod portage is through a bog. Go figure! During wet periods this will be a very muddy section of trail. This is the easiest part of the entire walk when it is dry though. The portage starts at an elevation of 1584 feet and ends at Bog Lake at 1554 feet above mean sea level.

The portage proceeds through the bog. It then enters the forest. From there it tends to go up and down a bit through the woods. There is never much gain or loss of elevation, but there is enough up and down to get your heart rate up. Mid-summer and the trail is overgrown with young trees and brush. The overall path of this portage is to go around the eastern side of a small hillock. The skeeeeeeters were quite vigorous here in July.

The lake is relatively shallow for its size and has some bog along its shoreline. You can see in the far distance the north shoreline of the lake which was scorched by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire.

The lake is relatively shallow for its size and has some marsh along much of its shoreline. You can see in the far distance the north shoreline of the lake which was scorched by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire.

The first part of the portage in this direction is through forest. The portage undulates up and down but neither gains nor loses much elevation. There is often blowdown to lug your gear over. Bugs will follow you all the way to your car. The last part of this portage is through a swampy section surrounde by alder trees. That part could be extremely muddy and have standing water if you visit this place after a rainstorm or in springtime. You will gain about 30 feet of elevation from Bog Lake back to the entry point parking lot.
